Matte black and satin nickel cabinet hardware, the two most requested finishes
Satin nickel and matte black are two of the most requested cabinet-hardware finishes. Most shoppers arrive undecided, weighing one against the other rather than searching by name for either. Satin nickel carries a soft, brushed sheen with a warm gray cast; matte black has no sheen at all, just a flat surface that absorbs rather than reflects. Jeffrey Alexander's Weser and Bordeaux lines make up a wide share of the collection, covering mushroom knobs, oval knobs, and bar pulls in classic transitional shapes.
Matching an existing kitchen
Satin nickel is the safer choice if you're matching hardware that's already partly nickel-toned, since it sits closer to brushed stainless and pewter than either polished nickel or chrome. Matte black works better when the goal is contrast rather than a match, since it reads dark against nearly every cabinet color short of black itself.
Satin nickel's brushed texture is forgiving day to day; fine scratches and light fingerprints blend into the existing grain instead of standing out on a smooth surface. Matte black shows less at a glance but reveals scuffs more clearly once they appear, since nothing breaks up the mark. Wipe either finish down with a barely wet cloth and a touch of dish soap; skip scouring pads, which can polish a shiny patch into the surface that never quite blends back in.
Shapes and sizes across vendors
Mushroom knobs, with rounded caps around 1-1/4" to 1-3/8" in diameter, and classic round knobs show up in both finishes, alongside bar pulls measuring 96 to 160 millimeters between screw holes. Elements Hardware's Gibson knob adds a more contemporary silhouette without leaving either finish, proof the collection isn't tied to one design house or one era. A few matching accessories, including closet valet rods, are also stocked in satin nickel for buyers outfitting more than cabinet doors.
Nearby finishes
For a cooler, brighter nickel tone, see chrome. For a softer black with more visible surface grain, take a look at bronze instead.
