Getting the fit right on door hardware sets

Every door hardware set here really involves two decisions stacked together: which trim style to buy, and whether it will seat correctly over the hole pattern already cut into the door. Rocky Mountain's rectangular sets handle most of what's sized generously in this group, built for openings that need to clear a full lock body, while Alno's smaller escutcheons back a bare knob spindle instead of a lever mechanism.

Three trim depths, one family

Builders series trim sits shallowest, a passage-grade plate runs a step deeper, and the express option splits the difference for doors with tighter jamb clearance. All three share the same two length options, so swapping trim depth partway through a project doesn't force a different plate size, only a different look at the edge where hand and hardware meet.

Reading a door's existing prep

Most residential interior doors are bored to one of two standard spacings, and a set sized for the wrong one won't sit flush no matter how closely the trim style matches what was there before. Pull a tape measure to the current hardware rather than trusting memory, particularly in an older house where prep sizing can predate today's common standards by several decades.

Repairing just the trim

Not every worn set needs full replacement. A scratched or dated plate can be swapped on its own once the lever or lock mechanism behind it still operates correctly, which keeps the job down to a single component rather than the entire assembly. Matching finish and bore size to the surviving hardware is the main thing to get right, since a mismatched finish stands out more than a slightly worn plate ever did.
