Floor, baseboard, and spring door stops compared

Door hardware door stops protect a wall or a piece of trim from a door swung open too hard, and the three mounting types here, floor, baseboard, and spring, solve that differently depending on where the door tends to hit. Floor stops for an open swing

A floor stop like the Tall Floor model or the shorter standard floor version screws directly into the floor at the point where the door's edge or knob would otherwise strike a wall. An express version trims the base down slightly for a lower-profile install. Floor stops work best on a door with a wide, unobstructed swing and nothing else planned for that section of floor.

Baseboard and holder styles

The baseboard door stop and holder, along with the plain door stop and holder, mount higher, at or near baseboard height, and both include a holder function that catches the door and keeps it open rather than just absorbing the impact. That combination suits a door that regularly needs to stay propped, a laundry room or a pantry, where a plain stop alone wouldn't serve the second job.

Spring stops for tight spaces

Hardware Resources' spring door stops mount low on the wall or baseboard and use a coiled arm with a rubber tip to absorb the door's swing, a smaller footprint than a floor stop for a tight hallway or a spot where a floor-mounted piece would sit in a walkway. The Hickory Hardware rigid stop takes a similar low-profile approach in a fixed, non-spring design, mounting flush against the baseboard instead.
