Why a flush pull exists

Pocket doors slide inside a wall cavity, and barn-style sliding doors travel along a track in front of the wall; in both cases, hardware that sticks out even an inch would catch on the frame or the wall itself. A flush pull's recessed pocket lets a finger reach in and pull the door along its track without adding any projection to the door face. Some models here also come in a lighter Express version of the same size.

Sizing a flush pull to the door

Length is the detail to check first. Pocket doors under 30 inches wide typically pair well with a shorter pull, around 4 to 6 inches, while a tall pocket door panel or a wide barn door benefits from a longer pull, closer to 11 to 22 inches, so there's enough recess to get a full grip. Depth of the recess should also clear whatever sits inside the wall cavity, particularly on a retrofit into an existing pocket frame.

Installing into an existing door

A flush pull sits inside a shallow mortise cut into the door face, so the depth of that mortise has to clear the pull's hardware without punching through a hollow-core door. Solid-core and solid wood doors give more room to work with. On a retrofit, measuring the existing mortise against the new pull's dimensions before ordering avoids a pull that sits proud of the surface or too shallow to seat properly.
