Pull backplates for installations that need extra coverage

Pull backplates are rectangular decorative plates that mount between a cabinet pull and the cabinet face. They serve two purposes. First, they hide existing screw holes during a hardware swap. Second, they add visual weight to plain cabinet doors where the pull alone doesn't carry the design. The plate sits flush against the door with the pull mounted through it, raising the pull about a millimeter off the cabinet surface and framing it with a defined border.

When pull backplates make sense

The most common case is replacing existing pulls with new pulls whose drill-center spacing doesn't match the existing holes. A larger backplate covers the old holes, lets the new pull mount at its required spacing, and avoids the slow work of filling and refinishing the cabinet. The design case is rarer. Backplates on perfectly drilled new cabinets only justify themselves on heavy traditional or period-revival kitchens where the cabinet door is too plain for the pull alone.

Sizing the plate to the pull

The backplate length should run about an inch longer than the pull's overall length so the plate visibly frames the pull rather than sitting underneath the screws. Width follows the pull's grip thickness and the cabinet door's available space. Some brands sell the pull and backplate as a matched set; others publish backplate-only catalogs sized to fit their own pull lines exactly. Mixing pull and backplate from different brands risks a finish mismatch.

Where pull backplates fit visually

Traditional, French country, English country, and library or formal kitchens host backplates well.
