Round balusters, sold plain or dressed up with one or two decorative spheres worked into the shaft, sit closer to a traditional stair, with the sphere detail adding a small but noticeable moment of interest partway up the post. Oval splits the difference between the two, reading softer than square without the full roundness of the sphere-detailed pieces. Branch balusters break from all of them, cast to look like an actual tree limb, complete with knots and irregular curves, which really only works in a mountain or lodge-style home rather than a more formal interior.

Sizing and matching before installation
